10 Best Gifts for Teachers

First year teachers deserve to be commended. They’ve taken on a very noble profession. Unfortunately, the statistics show that about half of all teachers leave the profession within the first three years. Perhaps if a teacher’s first year goes well, they have a better chance of being retained in the profession! If you have a first year teacher on your gift list, see the 10 items below for some great gift ideas.

1. Every first year teacher needs a copy of the book First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher. The husband and wife team of Harry K. Wong and Rosemary T. Wong wrote this practical book. These authors have thought of everything the first year teacher might be concerned about and have organized solutions into a helpful guide. It’s a must read for all teachers; the first year teacher will continue to use it a resource year after year.

2. Any teacher you talk with will tell you that they wish they had recorded more of their adventures during their career. The first year teacher on your list needs a lined journal in which to record funny anecdotes, struggles and victories, or notes of reflection.

3. Most first year teachers are surprised by the amount of meetings, staff developments, parent conferences, etc. that take place throughout the year. The first year teacher needs a calendar or a PDA to keep track of all of their commitments.

4. Late nights and early mornings are synonymous with a first year teacher’s life. Between lesson planning, building relationships with students and parents, and grading papers, first year teachers burn the candle at both ends. The first year teacher on your list needs gift cards to coffee shops so that they may stay awake throughout the year.

5. Although teachers can write off up to $250 on classroom supply expenses throughout the year, any first year teacher will tell you they spent at least double that amount. Find a local teacher supply store and purchase a gift card in any dollar amount. Literally, a first year teacher appreciates any dollar amount!

6. The first year teacher tends to experience levels of stress that he or she never thought possible with a career that makes so little money! This gift recipient deserves a gift card for a massage. The first teacher will soak up every ounce of pampering.

7. Teachers always take their work home with them, whether it’s their first year in the classroom or their 21st. Teachers need a fashionable tote in which to carry all of their graded papers, resources and teacher editions. The key word with this gift is "fashionable". Even though teachers love their profession, their tote doesn’t necessarily need to scream, "Teacher!" A nice leather carryall, or even a sturdy backpack are good options.

8. Create a gift basket that includes Advil, Airborne, Kleenex and various other cold and flu remedies. Teachers tend to get sick more in their first year than any other year. After the first year, their immune system has typically adjusted to all the germs associated with teaching.

9. Speaking of germs, teachers need an industrial size bottle of instant hand sanitizer sitting atop their desk at all times. This gift is easy to find and doesn’t cost a lot of money.

10. And finally, I’ve saved the best gift for last. Purchase a beach bucket and fill it with suntan lotion, sunglasses, a good book and any other fun items associated with summertime. As it nears the end of the year, present the gift to the first year teacher as a congratulations for making it and a reminder about the reward that comes at the end of the year: summertime!
